Nausea on a GLP-1 is usually not a mystery and it is not a reason to white-knuckle the first month. The medicine slows how fast the stomach empties. Food sits. The signal that used to mean I am hungry arrives late, or arrives as a wave. Most people can make the wave smaller. A few need their prescriber.
This is a practical piece. What is going on, what actually helps, and what to do with the nights that get wrecked when the day has been spent not eating.
| What people try | What it actually does |
|---|---|
| Skipping food to avoid feeling sick | Often makes the next wave worse. An empty, acid stomach is a poor partner for a delayed emptying time |
| A large protein dinner because you finally felt hungry | The meal that sits until 2am. Smaller and earlier wins |
| Ginger tea, ginger chews, crystallised ginger | A real, modest anti-nausea effect for a lot of people. Cheap, worth a week of testing |
| Changing injection day or time | Sometimes moves the worst 24 hours onto a quieter day. That is a prescriber conversation, not a guess |
What slowed emptying actually means
GLP-1 medicines slow gastric emptying. That is part of how they work: you stay fuller, you eat less, the calorie maths follows. The same mechanism is why a normal lunch can feel like a mistake, why water on an empty stomach sloshes, and why a late meal is still there when you lie down.
It is also why the second half of the night gets worse for some people in month one. You went to bed under-fed or over-full, both of which fragment sleep, and then you pay for it twice: a bad morning, then more nausea because you are running on fumes.
What actually helps
-
Eat small, and eat something
Three or four small plates beat one heroic dinner. Cold or room-temperature food is often easier than hot. A few bites of yoghurt, a slice of toast, a handful of crackers is a meal in week two. The job is to give the stomach a job, not to hit yesterday's calories.
-
Ginger, hydration, and a slower swallow
Ginger before the worst part of the day. Water in sips, not glasses. If plain water turns your stomach, a pinch of salt in it is closer to what you need than another black coffee. We do not sell electrolyte sachets. A kitchen does.

Protect the night, even if the day was a write-off
Nausea is a daytime problem that becomes a sleep problem if you let it. Keep the last meal small and at least three hours before bed. Then give the last hour a shape. SleepHit is a wind-down, not an anti-nausea drug: glycine, magnesium bisglycinate, L-theanine, ashwagandha, taurine and B6, one stick in 8 to 12 oz of water, 30 to 60 minutes before bed. The point is to stop the day from following you into the second half of the night.
When it is a doctor conversation
Vomiting that keeps fluids down, dizziness on standing, a sudden inability to keep anything in, or nausea that is still escalating after the first two dose steps: that is not a ginger problem. Contact the person who prescribed the medicine. Dose timing and dose size are theirs, not an article's.
For the fatigue that often travels with this, read headaches and fatigue in month one. For the plate when appetite comes back in scraps, read how much to eat on GLP-1.
